How to Decorate Your Door for the Holidays: Fun, Festive Ideas

Holiday Door Decorations

The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and fun. It's also a great time to show your holiday spirit with holiday door decorations at your front door! Let us begin by telling you a story...

Bodi and Evan were two young, adventurous Tampanians, that lived on the beach near Tampa, Florida. While they absolutely loved the beach life, they had both grown up in Ohio, and they missed the snow and the leaves changing color during the Autumn season. So they set out on a journey to find the perfect Christmas door decorations to put them back in the holiday spirit.

They started out by riding their bikes around Tampa, looking at all of the homes that had decorations up. But they weren’t happy with any of them. The lights were too bright, or the Santas were too cheesy. They wanted something unique, something special.

Finally, they found a small shop tucked away in a corner of the city. The sign said DoorFoto Holiday Decorations, and it looked like it had been there for years. They thought to themselves, 'what the heck is a DoorFoto?' They walked in and were immediately greeted by a friendly woman who asked them what they were looking for.

After telling her their story, she led them to the back of the store where there was an incredible selection of fabric door covers wrapped around over 100 doors! Bodi and Evan had never seen anything like this and thought to themselves 'how did this woman get all of these doors in this tiny shop, and why have we never seen such beautiful holiday door decorations before? Bodi and Evan found the perfect one for each holiday and promised the woman that they would tell the world about her little shop called DoorFoto. It would make the perfect Christmas door decoration.

They thanked the woman and headed back home, excited to put up their new decorations. And they’ve been telling the world and coming back to that same shop every year since.

What is a DoorFoto?

Bodi and Evan wrote this...

DoorFotos are the perfect decoration for your holiday decorating. They have over 1,800+ images for you to choose from, for any holiday, occasion, or event.

DoorFotos are hand-made right here in Tampa, FL U.S.A., from start to finish! DoorFotos go on your door just like a fitted bed sheet in 28 seconds and are washable like a bedsheet too. No hot glue, hooks, double-sided tape or staples are required!

They have designs from any holiday that you could think of such as this "Thanksgiving Door Hangers" which features some block letters with a wood background.

Or this "Mardi Gras New Orleans" DoorFoto that features a beautiful Mardi Gras mask right in the middle.

And of course, they have designs such as this classic "Greetings from Santa" that will be the perfect focal point for your Christmas door and this "Happy Hanukkah" which features a beautiful garland of lights right in the middle that would both look beautiful on your front door.

Just a Girl door cover is the perfect way to show your holiday spirit! This fun and festive door cover makes it a great way to spread some holiday cheer.

These few examples aren't even making a dent in the options they have online for you, since they have over 1,800+ images currently and are constantly adding in new designs! Make sure you check their website often for some new design drops.

Plus, DoorFotos come in 3 different sizes (30/32"x80", 36"x80", or 36"x96"), so they do not have to go on your front door solely! We put them on our bedroom doors or you can put one on your classroom or office door to get creative for the holiday season. (They can always make you a custom-sized DoorFoto too if you have a door that doesn't have the dimensions of their 3 base sizes above!)

We thank Bodi and Evan for their excitement around DoorFoto, but we have to talk about some other holiday door decorations in this blog post.

Holiday Garland

A popular way to decorate your front door or Christmas door for the holidays is by hanging garland. Garland can be made from a variety of materials, including evergreen branches, plain ribbon or striped ribbon, or even paper.

You can also add lights to your garland for a more festive look. If you're using evergreen branches, be sure to spray them with a fire-retardant before hanging them up.

There are some less traditional garland options that are fun to decorate with too such as popcorn garland, candy garland, or even a garland made from holiday cards.

Like wreaths, garlands are often made from evergreen branches because they symbolize life and growth. But, there are also holiday garlands with lights, ornaments, and even ribbons! You can find holiday garlands to fit any holiday decorating theme.

A simple set of instructions for making your own garland is as follows:

  1. Gather your materials. You will need a variety of evergreen branches, ribbons, floral wire, and/or paper.
  2. Cut the evergreen branches/floral wire into pieces that are about two feet long.
  3. Tie the branches together with the ribbon or paper around the wire.
  4. Hang the garland on your door!

Garlands can be strung up at the front door, on the mantle, or even on the staircase. Get creative and have fun with it!

Seasonal Wreaths

One of the most popular holiday door decorations for your front door or Christmas door is a wreath. Wreaths are available in many different styles and can be made from a variety of materials, including evergreen branches, ribbons, and even holiday lights!

The most traditional wreath is made from evergreen branches, as it symbolizes life and growth.

But, if you do not want a traditional wreath, there are holiday wreaths with lights, ornaments, and even ribbons! You can find holiday wreaths to fit any holiday decorating theme.

No matter what style of holiday wreath you choose, be sure to hang it in a place where it will be seen by your guests! It would be a great addition to your Christmas door too of course!

You could also choose to make your own wreath. This can be a fun activity to do with your family or friends. If you make your own wreath, you can be sure that it is unique and will reflect your holiday spirit!

You can make a simple wreath by wrapping ribbon around an evergreen branch, or you can get creative and add holiday string lights, ornaments, and other decorations. You could even put some pine cones around the wreath if you wanted!

No matter what you choose to do, remember that the holiday season is a time for family, friends, and fun! So, get creative and have fun decorating your door for the holidays.

Christmas Trees

Another popular holiday door decoration that will go great with a Christmas door for the holidays is a Christmas tree of course! Christmas trees are available in many different sizes, so you can find one that fits perfectly at your front door. They also come in a variety of colors and styles, so you can find one that matches your holiday decorating theme.

If you don't have enough space for a full-sized Christmas tree next to your Christmas door, consider placing a mini tree near your doorstep. You can decorate this mini tree with some mini ornaments, and maybe even make your own mini presents to go underneath the tree! You could even get a mini strand of string lights to put on your tree too (just make sure they are waterproof since they will be outside!)

One of the best things about a holiday tree is that they can be decorated in any style that you want. So, if you want a traditional tree with red and green decorations or a more modern tree with white lights and silver ornaments, you can find what you're looking for.

You could even go a totally different route and decorate the tree with holiday-themed items such as candy canes, gingerbread cookies, or even holiday-themed clothing! (Just make sure that if you use a food option on your tree, that this tree isn't outside so animals don't eat your decorations!)

You could also check out our Christmas tree designs on DoorFoto.com to turn your Christmas door into a tree, without actually using a tree! We suggest this "Christmas Tree Balls" design to make your Christmas door come to life this season, but we have plenty more designs to make your Christmas door wishes come true so check them out!

No matter what style you choose, a Christmas tree is sure to bring some holiday cheer to your home!

Front Porch Lights

Another way to decorate your Christmas door, or any door in your home for the holidays is by hanging holiday lights around it or on it! You can find holiday lights in a variety of colors, sizes, and styles. So, you can choose the perfect lights to match your holiday decorating theme.

Hanging front porch lights around your Christmas door is a great way to add some extra holiday cheer to your home. Plus, it's a great way to show off your holiday joy to your neighbors and passersby!

If you want to get really creative, you could even try creating a holiday light display on your door! This can be done by hanging lights in different shapes or patterns, or by using holiday-themed lights such as candy cane lights or gingerbread lights.

Or you could go for the classic, white lights draped around or on your Christmas door. This will really make the door the focal point of your home. Plus, lights pair perfectly with a beautiful holiday DoorFoto!

You could either drape the lights on or around the door as usual, even with the DoorFoto on it, since our stretchy athletic fabric wraps will do no damage to your door or change its functioning in any way. Or, you could place a spotlight pointing at your Christmas door with a DoorFoto on it too!

One holiday design at DoorFoto that would look great with a spotlight on it in our opinion is this "Martin Luther King" DoorFoto. This design of MLK would pop even more than it does on its own if you added a spotlight to it... especially at night!

Front Door Signs

A Christmas door decoration that is becoming more and more popular is a festive sign! You can find holiday signs in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors. So, you can find the perfect sign to match your holiday decorating theme.

Holiday signs are a great way to add some extra cheer to your home. There are holiday signs that say things such as "Merry Christmas", "Happy Holidays", or even just "Joy"!

You can also find holiday signs that feature holiday-themed images such as reindeer, snowflakes, or Santa Claus. These types of signs are sure to bring a smile to your face every time you see them!

If you want to get really creative, you could even try making your own holiday sign! This can be done by using a holiday-themed stencil or by painting holiday images on a blank sign. You could even put some string lights on the sign to get extra festive!

No matter what type of holiday sign you choose, it is sure to bring some extra cheer to your home!
